Four Intermediate chapters explain the models behind today's AI products: foundation models and what adapting and depending on them costs, one request through Llama 3.1 8B on an H100 from tokens to the KV cache, generation from a character model to Stable Diffusion, and images, audio and video as priced tokens. A Review chapter then puts the whole volume to work in one design review of an airline assistant, with a monthly bill, a launch gate, an automation threshold and rollback alarms, and sends the reader on to Volume 2's mathematics.
