On 2 August 2026 the EU AI Act reached its general application date, and the high-risk obligations many engineering teams had spent 2025 preparing for did not start. Six days earlier, on 27 July 2026, the Digital Omnibus on AI (Regulation (EU) 2026/1744) had entered into force. It moved the rules for high-risk systems in the Annex III areas, including hiring and credit scoring, from 2 August 2026 to 2 December 2027, and those embedded in regulated products to 2 August 2028. The same spring brought two more reversals. On 17 April 2026, US banking regulators replaced SR 11-7, the model-risk guidance banks had followed since 2011, with SR 26-2, which leaves generative and agentic AI outside its scope. On 14 May 2026 Colorado replaced its AI Act, weeks after a federal court had paused it, with a narrower law that takes effect on 1 January 2027.
