Sixteen experienced open-source developers forecast that AI tools would make them 24% faster. After finishing their tasks, they estimated the tools had made them 20% faster. Measured, they took 19% longer when AI was allowed. The research group METR ran that randomized trial in the first half of 2025 on 246 real tasks in repositories the developers knew well, allowing or forbidding AI tools task by task; the tools were mostly Cursor Pro with Claude 3.5 and 3.7 Sonnet.
