Logging

A 30-day deletion policy lasts until a court says otherwise. In the copyright case The New York Times brought against OpenAI and Microsoft, a US magistrate judge ordered OpenAI on 13 May 2025 to "preserve and segregate all output log data that would otherwise be deleted on a going forward basis until further order of the Court." Conversations that users had deleted, and API content that OpenAI normally deleted after 30 days, now had to be kept. OpenAI said the order did not reach API customers on its zero-data-retention endpoints, because their prompts and outputs were never stored in the first place. The ongoing obligation ended on 26 September 2025; data already preserved stayed preserved, except for requests from the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
