In nine days, insurers reported 408,078 claims to Florida's Office of Insurance Regulation, which required a count of catastrophe claims every day after Hurricane Ian came ashore in southwest Florida on 28 September 2022. A carrier handling 6% of those claims would have opened more than 24,000 in nine days, most of them in the first few, on top of its ordinary work.
